What is the Decree Fellowship?
The Decree Fellowship is a two-week intensive summer programme designed for twelve high-potential final-year Omani law students from local and international universities. Delivered through a combination of expert-led lectures, guided workshops, panel discussions with senior practitioners, a field visit, and a team-based capstone project, the programme runs daily from 8:00am to 4:00pm over ten working days. The programme is delivered bilingually in Arabic and English.
The programme is not a conventional internship or training course. It is designed as a substantive professional experience that prepares fellows to enter the legal profession with confidence, competence, and a strong peer network.
Learning Objectives
Upon completing the Decree Fellowship, each fellow will be able to:
Understand the Omani Legal System
Understand the foundations of the Omani legal system, including the Basic Statute of the State, the lawmaking process, the role of the Council of Oman, and the structure of key regulatory frameworks across company law, labour law, dispute resolution, procurement, banking, data protection, and tax.
Apply Practical Legal Skills
Conduct legal research and identify primary Omani legal resources, draft professional legal documents using modern tools, and deliver a clear, evidence-based capstone presentation on an Omani legal topic.
Navigate Career Decisions
Navigate early-career decisions with confidence, including understanding the differences between in-house, government, and private practice roles, the formalities for qualifying as an advocate or legal consultant, and how to maintain a professional online profile.
The Network Effect
Beyond its educational content, the Decree Fellowship is intentionally designed to create a cohort-based network of twelve emerging legal professionals from diverse educational backgrounds and institutions. This peer network provides Decree Fellows with a lasting support structure as they navigate the early years of their careers.
Once fellows complete their university studies, they will be welcomed into the broader Decree community. Alumni will be invited to Decree events and will benefit from a dedicated series of programming designed to support their ongoing professional development and strengthen connections across cohorts.
